How Music Benefits Our Children

Rhythm is there in the cycles of the seasons, in the migrations of the birds and animals, in the fruiting and withering of plants, and in the birth, maturation and death of ourselves.” -- Mickey Heart

Mickey Heart

It would be difficult, and frankly quite depressing, to imagine an early childhood education environment without the presence of music. Both for creating a mood through background music, and as a direct teaching tool, music is a valuable resource when dealing with children.

California Kids Club strongly promotes the use of music in its environment. Our rich Music Club ® curriculum is linked to our monthly language themes to enhance the use and understanding of thematic language. Music Club ® also makes use of a variety of music types, such as dance songs, traditional songs, and even tailor-made original pieces.

After last year’s success, it is exciting to launch our second Music Week, where the children will explore specific genres, namely, Rock ‘n Roll, Latin Music, Opera, and Reggae. Our students will have the opportunity to experience new kinds of music, dance instruments, and culture.

Before discussing the deeper treasures of a musical environment, let’s acknowledge the obvious. Music generally affects our moods. Festive occasions, parties and celebrations would be difficult to imagine without the presence of music.

The physical, emotional, cognitive and social benefits of our exposure to music are so real that they have led to the development of Music Therapy, supported by bodies such as the American Music Therapy Association.

According to a study conducted by the journal, Psychology of Music, Children exposed to a multi-year program of music tuition involving training in increasing complex rhythmic, tonal and practical skills display superior cognitive performance in reading skills when compared with their non-musically trained peers. In other words, studying music is linked to better reading skills.

Since California Kids Club is a school that bases a lot of its lessons on books and aims to teach children how to read, the relationship between music and reading is worth noting.

There are boundless more advantages to experiencing music, but in terms of what development aspects we focus on most here at California Kids Club, teamwork, self-expression, risk taking, self-discipline, spatial intelligence (math), and a sense of achievement all benefit from active exposure to music.

Bearing this in mind though, Dr. Kyle Pruett, clinical professor of child psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine states: “It’s important not to oversell how smart music can make you, music makes your kid interesting and happy, and smart will come later.”
